Redwood Grotto
We have an interesting variety of different caves in our area. Most of the caves are formed in limestone. In many cases the rock has been subjected to metamorphism and the limestone has marbleized forming beautiful white streaks in the grey rock. The area has also seen a lot of volcanic activity. There are numerous lava flows that cooled on the surface but the hot lava interior continued to flow forming lava tubes. Subsequent collapses have allowed entry into some of the tube systems. An interesting facet of some of the lava tubes is that they contain perennial ice: these 'ice caves' contain ice floors and in some cases elaborate ice formations.
